Welcome to Geneva! You have just landed at GVA (Geneva Cointrin Airport).
Usually, arriving in a major European city means a long, expensive commute to the hotel. Think of the hour-long train from Heathrow or the costly taxi from Charles de Gaulle.
Geneva is different. In fact, it might have the best airport connection in the world. The airport is located just 4km (2.5 miles) from the city center, and if you know what you are doing, you can be checking into your hotel 20 minutes after landing.
In this 2026 guide, we break down the fastest, cheapest, and easiest ways to get from the runway to the Old Town.
The “Free Ticket” Myth: Important 2026 Update
Before we start, let’s clear up a massive confusion.
If you read older blogs (from 2020 or earlier), they will tell you: “Just press the button on the machine in the baggage claim area and get a free ticket!”
STOP. As of 2026, this machine no longer exists. It has been removed.
Can you still travel for free?
Yes, but only if you have received your Geneva Transport Card digitally before you arrived.
- If you have the QR Code from your hotel: The ride is free. Scan and go.
- If you don’t have it yet: You must buy a standard ticket (€3.00 / CHF 3.00) to get to the city. Don’t risk a fine (which is now over CHF 100) on your first day.
Option 1: The Train (The 6-Minute Miracle)
This is, without a doubt, the best way to travel.
- Route: Geneva Airport Station (Gare de Genève-Aéroport) to Geneva Main Station (Gare Cornavin).
- Time: 6 Minutes. (Yes, really. It takes longer to walk out of the plane than to ride to the city).
- Frequency: Trains leave every 12-15 minutes.
- Cost: CHF 3.00 (Standard “Tout Genève” Ticket) or Free (with Transport Card).
How to find it:
Turn left when you exit the Arrivals Hall. Walk through the shopping mall area following the “SBB CFF FFS” (Train) signs. The station is practically inside the terminal. All trains departing from here stop at Geneva Cornavin.
Option 2: The Bus (Scenic & Specific)
The train is fast, but it only goes to the central station. If your hotel is in a different neighborhood, the bus might be better.
- Bus 10: Goes to the city center via Bel-Air and Rive (Great for Old Town hotels).
- Bus 5: Goes towards the United Nations and Cornavin.
- Time: 20-25 minutes.
- Cost: CHF 3.00 or Free.
Why take the bus?
If you have heavy luggage and your hotel is right next to a bus stop, it saves you from walking from the train station. Also, Bus 10 is a nice scenic introduction to the city’s suburban architecture.
Option 3: Taxi & Uber (The Expensive Route)
Unless you are a CEO on an expense account or have 5 suitcases, skip this.
- Cost: Expect to pay between CHF 35.00 – CHF 50.00 depending on traffic and time of day.
- Uber: Available in Geneva, but prices surge heavily when flights land.
- Time: During rush hour (8 AM or 5 PM), a taxi can take 30-40 minutes due to traffic. The train takes 6 minutes. You do the math.
Option 4: Hotel Shuttles
Many hotels near the airport (like the Hilton, Mövenpick, or Crowne Plaza) offer free shuttle buses.
- Where: Look for the “Hotel Shuttle” signs outside the Arrivals level (Gate 3 or 4 usually).
- Frequency: usually every 20 minutes.
- Cost: Free for guests.
How to Buy a Ticket (If You Need One)
If you haven’t received your free digital card yet, you need to buy a ticket before you board.
- Machines: Located right next to the train platforms and bus stops.
- App: Download the “tpg” app (Transport Publics Genevois). It is the easiest way to buy a ticket on your phone.
- Currency: Machines accept Swiss Francs (CHF), Euros (EUR), and Credit Cards.
Note: If you pay in Euros, change is given in Swiss Francs.
Summary: Which One Should I Choose?
| Goal | Mode | Time | Cost |
| Speed | Train | 6 Mins | CHF 3.00 (or Free) |
| Old Town Hotel | Bus 10 | 25 Mins | CHF 3.00 (or Free) |
| Luxury / Lazy | Taxi | 20+ Mins | CHF 40.00+ |
| Airport Hotel | Shuttle | 10 Mins | Free |
Conclusion
Geneva welcomes you with efficiency. There is no stress, no long commute, and if you are smart with your hotel booking, no cost.
Hop on the train, watch the Swiss landscape flash by for exactly six minutes, and step out into the heart of the city.
Eat a croissant at the station, Walk to your hotel, and Repeat.
