If Sultanahmet is Istanbul’s grandfather who tells you history stories, Kadıköy is the rebellious teenager who plays guitar and stays out all night.
Location: Asian Side (Anadolu Yakası) Vibe: Electric, Bohem, Loud Soundtrack: Indie Rock mixed with Seagull screams
Today, I took the 20-minute ferry ride from Europe to Asia. As soon as I stepped off the boat, the energy changed. The tourists disappeared. The suits disappeared. Instead, I saw tattoos, vintage coats, and people carrying instrument cases. This is the “Cool Side.” And I spent 12 hours getting lost in it.
The Bull (Boğa) Meeting Point
I walked up the main hill to find the famous Bull Statue (Boğa Heykeli). It’s just a bronze bull. But it is the center of the universe for locals. “Meet me at the Bull,” I heard someone say on the phone. Literally hundreds of people were waiting there for their friends. It’s chaos. I took a photo and moved on before I got trampled by the crowd.
Antique Hunting on Tellalzade Street
I turned into a narrow, cobblestone street called Tellalzade Sokak. This is Antique Heaven. Old lamps, dusty Ottoman maps, vintage cameras, and velvet armchairs spilled out onto the street. I walked into a shop that smelled of old paper and wood polish.
I found a stack of black-and-white photos from the 1950s. Strangers’ memories. I almost bought a massive brass telescope I definitely couldn’t fit in my suitcase. Walking here feels like browsing through Istanbul’s attic.
The Food: Beyond Kebabs
I got hungry. In Kadıköy, you don’t just eat; you feast. I went to Çiya Sofrası. The chef here is like an archaeologist of food. He finds forgotten recipes from Anatolia and brings them back to life. I ate a soup made of yogurt and mint, and a kebab with sour cherries.
It was weird. It was wonderful. Then, for dessert, I grabbed a Midye Dolma (Stuffed Mussel) from a street vendor. Rule #1: You never eat just one. You eat them until you are ashamed of the pile of shells at your feet. I ate ten.
The Sunset Ritual: The Rocks of Moda
As the sun began to drop, I followed the crowd walking south towards Moda. We reached the seaside park. But nobody was sitting on the benches. Everyone—hundreds of young people—was sitting on the giant rocks lining the water. I found a spot on a rock. Across the water, the sun was setting behind the minarets of the Blue Mosque in Europe.
People were playing guitars. Someone was walking a dog that looked like a bear. A group of friends was sharing a pizza. There is no entrance fee. No dress code. Just the best view in the world and a collective feeling of “We live in a beautiful city.”
Nightlife: Kadife Sokak (Bar Street)
When it got dark, the noise level went up. I walked back to Kadife Sokak, also known as “Bar Street.” It’s loud. It’s gritty. It’s alive. Music from five different bars was clashing in the street—Jazz vs. Rock vs. Turkish Pop. I sat at Viktor Levi, an old wine house hidden in a garden, to escape the noise for a bit. They make their own berry wine. It was sweet and dangerous.
The Verdict
I’m writing this on the night ferry back to Europe. My ears are ringing. My feet hurt. Kadıköy isn’t polished. It’s messy, graffiti-covered, and loud. But it feels real. If you want to see monuments, stay in Europe. If you want to feel the pulse of the city, come to Asia.
My “Eat Walk Repeat” Note for Today:
Eat: Stuffed Mussels (Midye) on the street corner. Squeeze lots of lemon.
Walk: From the Bull Statue all the way to the Moda lighthouse. It’s the perfect loop.
Repeat: Come back for the Sunday vintage market.
