There is a very specific, deeply romanticized image of visiting a Greek island. It usually involves renting a vintage Vespa, throwing a towel in the storage compartment, and cruising effortlessly down a coastal road with the warm wind in your hair.
Location – A dusty crossroad near Dassia
Time – 02 00 PM
Temperature – 33°C (91°F) and intensely bright
Mood – Alert and covered in dust
Soundtrack – The high-pitched whine of a 125cc engine and wind roaring in the ears
I walked into a rental shop in Corfu Town with this exact image in my head. I handed over my driver’s license, paid thirty euros, and was handed the keys to a scratched, decidedly un-vintage 125cc scooter. Ten minutes later, as I merged onto the main road out of the city, the romantic illusion completely shattered.
The Pothole Minefield
The first reality of riding a scooter in Corfu is the condition of the asphalt. Outside of the main highways, the road network is a patchwork of ancient, sun-baked tarmac, sudden gravel patches, and massive potholes. On a scooter with tiny wheels, hitting a pothole at 40 kilometers per hour is a bone-jarring experience that threatens to throw you directly over the handlebars.
I had to ride with intense, exhausting focus, constantly scanning the road surface ten meters ahead of my front tire, dodging sunken drain covers and deep cracks.
The Local Traffic
The second reality is the local driving culture. Corfiots drive with a sense of urgency and a complete disregard for lane markings. I was riding close to the right edge of the road, thinking I was being safe. Suddenly, a massive, rusted pickup truck carrying watermelons overtook me on a blind curve, passing so close that the wind of its wake violently shook my scooter.
You quickly learn that as a tourist on a scooter, you are at the absolute bottom of the food chain. You have to ride defensively, constantly checking your mirrors, and fully accept that locals will pass you anywhere, at any time.
The Wind and the Dust
By early afternoon, the island winds pick up. Riding down a coastal road, a sudden gust of wind coming off the sea can physically push the scooter across the lane. Combined with the dry summer heat, the wind constantly kicks up fine, white dust from the olive groves. Within an hour of riding, my arms were coated in a thin layer of grime, and my eyes were burning.
The Verdict
Renting a scooter in Corfu is incredibly practical. It solves the nightmare of finding parking at crowded beaches and uses almost no gas. But it is not a relaxing, cinematic experience. It requires serious concentration, strong nerves, and an acceptance that you will be hot, dusty, and completely exposed to the chaotic island traffic.
My “Eat Walk Repeat” Note for Today
Eat – Riding a scooter makes you incredibly dehydrated. Pull over at any roadside bakery outside the main towns and grab an ice-cold bottle of water and a slice of Tiropita (cheese pie) for quick energy.
Walk – Do not try to ride your scooter all the way down the steep, unpaved dirt paths leading to secluded beaches. Park at the top where the asphalt ends and walk the rest of the way. Loose gravel on a steep hill is a guaranteed crash.
Repeat – Wear a helmet. Always. It ruins the wind-in-your-hair fantasy, but the combination of bad roads and aggressive drivers makes it absolutely non-negotiable.
