Timing a trip to the Greek islands is a delicate science. If you go too early in May, the air is pleasant but the sea is freezing. If you go in August, the water is perfect but the island is bursting with tourists and the heat is suffocating.
Location – Elli Beach (Rhodes Town)
Time – 10 30 AM
Temperature – 27°C (80°F) and perfectly clear
Mood – Energized and uncrowded
Soundtrack – Gentle waves and the soft hum of beach cafes opening up
Rhodes in June is the absolute sweet spot. It is that brief, golden window where the island has fully woken up for the season, but the frantic, overwhelming energy of high summer has not yet arrived.
The Perfect Climate
I spent the morning walking down to Elli Beach, the famous pebble strip located right at the northern tip of Rhodes Town. By mid-June, the intense Mediterranean sun has done its job. The sea temperature has finally crossed the threshold from “refreshing” to “comfortable.” I dove off the iconic concrete diving board sitting out in the bay. The water was crystalline and brilliantly warm.
The air temperature is equally perfect. At 27 degrees Celsius, it is undeniably beach weather, but it lacks the heavy, oppressive humidity of late July. You can easily spend three hours lying in the sun without feeling completely drained of your energy.
The Luxury of Space
The greatest advantage of June, however, is the space. During the peak months, Elli Beach is a tightly packed grid of sunbeds, and finding an empty one after 9 00 AM is a battle. But today, the beach was only half full. There was no aggressive competition for umbrellas.
This luxury of space extends to the rest of the island. Walking through the Old Town in the afternoon, the streets were lively but not choked. You can actually stop to admire the medieval architecture without being pushed by a massive wave of cruise ship passengers. The waiters at the local tavernas are relaxed, entirely happy to chat rather than rushing to clear your table for the next group.
The Verdict
If your schedule allows it, June is the ultimate time to experience Rhodes. You get the absolute best of the island’s weather, its fully operational tourist infrastructure, and the rare ability to actually breathe and move freely before the summer madness peaks.
My “Eat Walk Repeat” Note for Today
Eat – June is the beginning of the stone fruit season in Greece. Skip the heavy desserts and buy a massive bag of fresh Cherries and Peaches from the local farmers market just outside the Old Town walls to eat on the beach.
Walk – Take advantage of the mild evening weather to walk the entire perimeter of the Mandraki Harbor. You can comfortably walk past the windmills and the Fort of St. Nicholas without sweating through your clothes.
Repeat – Even though it is the shoulder season, the sea reflects intense UV rays. Do not underestimate the June sun just because there is a cool breeze. Apply heavy sunscreen before you get on a boat or walk the city walls.
