Corfu Town is relatively flat, but its skyline is completely dominated by two massive, rocky peaks jutting out into the sea. This is the Old Fortress (Palaio Frourio), built by the Venetians in the 15th century to spot pirate ships and Ottoman fleets.
Location – The Old Fortress (Palaio Frourio), Corfu Town
Time – 04 30 PM
Temperature – 31°C (88°F) with zero shade
Mood – Exhausted but victorious
Soundtrack – Gravel crunching underfoot and the distant horn of a massive ferry
Walking across the iron bridge over the moat to enter the fortress is easy. But I wanted the view from the very top, where the old lighthouse sits next to a massive iron cross. And to get there, you have to climb.
The Steep Ascent
There is no elevator in a 500-year-old military base. The climb starts on a wide, sloping cobblestone path, but it quickly turns into a series of steep, uneven stone steps carved directly into the rock. By 4 30 PM, the sun was still intensely hot, radiating off the stone walls and baking the air.
I was sweating through my shirt within ten minutes. My calves were burning, and the lack of shade made the climb feel like a genuine endurance test. I had to stop twice just to catch my breath, pretending to admire an old cannon so the other tourists wouldn’t see how out of shape I was.
The Panoramic Reward
When I finally reached the summit, the heat suddenly broke. At the very top, a strong, cool wind blows constantly off the Ionian Sea. I leaned against the stone wall next to the lighthouse and looked down. The view completely erased the pain of the climb.
To my left, the deep, ink-blue water of the sea stretched out toward the jagged, mountainous coastline of Albania in the distance. To my right, the entire Old Town of Corfu was laid out below me like a map. I could see the maze of terracotta roofs, the green cricket field of the Spianada, and the pastel-colored walls of the Venetian mansions glowing in the late afternoon sun. It is a god-like perspective over one of the most beautiful cities in the Mediterranean.
The Verdict
The climb to the top of the Old Fortress is physically punishing in the summer heat, but it is visually mandatory. You cannot truly appreciate the scale and the strategic brilliance of Corfu Town until you see it from above. Just accept the sweat, bring water, and enjoy the wind at the summit.
My “Eat Walk Repeat” Note for Today
Eat – There is a small café hidden inside the fortress grounds near the old barracks. Stop there for a freezing cold Greek Frappé (iced coffee) before you start the climb to give your heart a caffeine boost.
Walk – Do not attempt this climb in cheap flip-flops. The centuries-old stone steps have been polished smooth by millions of footsteps and are incredibly slippery, even when dry. Wear proper sneakers.
Repeat – Timing is everything. Do not climb at noon. Go after 4 30 PM when the sun starts to lower. Not only is it cooler, but the golden hour light makes the terracotta roofs of the town look practically radioactive.
