I am not a morning person. But in Antalya, if you wait until 10:00 AM to go to the beach, you have already lost. The sun becomes a hammer, the sand burns your feet, and the water is crowded with inflatable flamingos and loud music.
Location: Konyaaltı Beach
Time: 06:45 AM
Temperature: 26°C (Already warming up)
Mood: Sleepy but alive
To experience the real Mediterranean, you have to wake up before the city does. Today, my alarm went off at 6:00 AM. I grabbed a towel, put on my swimsuit, and walked down to Konyaaltı Beach.
The Empty Coastline
Walking down the massive stretch of Konyaaltı at this hour feels like having a private ocean. The beach clubs are closed. The umbrellas are folded. The only people around are a few dedicated joggers and local retirees doing their morning stretches.
The most important thing to know about Konyaaltı is that there is no sand. It is a pebble beach. Walking on these smooth, grey stones barefoot is an involuntary foot massage. It hurts a little, but it wakes you up faster than coffee.
The Glass Water
I stood at the edge of the water. At 7:00 AM, the Mediterranean Sea is completely flat. There are no waves, no boats disturbing the surface. It looks like a giant sheet of blue glass stretching all the way to the horizon. And towering right next to the water are the Beydağları (Taurus Mountains), still covered in a light morning mist.
I didn’t hesitate. I walked in. The water wasn’t cold, but it was refreshing enough to make me gasp. It was crystal clear. I could see the pebbles ten feet below me perfectly.
The Salt and the Silence
I swam out about fifty meters. I flipped onto my back and just floated. The salt density in the Mediterranean is high, so you barely have to move your arms to stay afloat. It was completely silent. My ears were underwater. All I could see was the blue sky and the sharp peaks of the mountains. For twenty minutes, the chaos of travel, the stress of flights, and the intense heat of the city didn’t exist. There was only the salt and the silence.
The Awakening
By 8:00 AM, the spell was broken. A beach club started playing a muffled bass beat. Families started arriving with coolers and screaming children. The sun climbed higher, and the heat of the day officially began.
I walked out of the water, the salt instantly drying tight on my skin. I didn’t even use a towel. I just sat on the warm pebbles and watched the city wake up.
The Verdict
If you come to Antalya, do not sleep in. The 7 AM swim isn’t just an activity; it is a ritual of purification. It washes away the sweat of the previous day and gives you the energy to survive the afternoon heat.
My “Eat Walk Repeat” Note for Today:
Eat: Buy a fresh Simit from a street cart on your walk back to the hotel. The salt from the sea and the sesame from the bread are the perfect combination.
Walk: Walk the length of the Konyaaltı promenade (Sahil Park) while it is still in the shade.
Repeat: Set your alarm. Do it again tomorrow.
